Frieze from the pillar of Lucius Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus: The frieze crowns a pillar, the construction of which had been launched by King Perseus of Macedon. Following the defeat of Perseus at Pydna, the Roman victor, the consul Lucius Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus, completed the monument by adding the frieze, above which he mounted his own equestrian statue. The frieze constitutes the earliest historical relief, as it draws inspiration from the abovementioned battle. It is dated shortly after 168 BC.
