Salle 9

In addition to the official dedications by cities and rulers, a large number of anonymous pilgrims dedicated offerings to Apollo. Among them, some small bronze votives dating back to 5th century BC:

–       a bronze incense burner, with a young female figure supporting with her raised arms and head the hemispherical cauldron that contained the incense.

–       a bronze figurine of a youth playing double aulos, aided by a leather strap (phorbeia) tied like an “halter” around his head and mouth.

–       a group of two athletes, the one of which was possibly a victor in the long jump, since he is shown holding the haltere that helped him accomplish his victory.

Rich was also the sculptural decoration of the building of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. From the decoration of the temple of the goddess are displayed a female head made of poros stone, overpainted clay architectural members, and fragments of two winged Nikai functioning as acroteria.
