Salle 2

In this Hall, the visitors of the museum enjoy an exquisite example of small-scale sculpture, a bronze nude male figurine dating back to 630–620 BC. It illustrates elements of the so-called “Daedalic style”, combining rigidity with the strictly frontal portrayal of the figures, yet seen through the prism of a new era that aimed at plasticity and attempted to depict personal features. Interpreted by research as a work produced in a Cretan workshop, it was possibly a precious votive offering dedicated to Apollo by an affluent pilgrim who travelled to the Delphic sanctuary, bearing tangible witness to the contacts of Crete with Delphi during the early historical period.
